ONE WAY NORTH

6,000km. Two World Records.

At 4:28am on Friday June 19th, Dr. Sarah Ruggins arrived at Nordkapp with not one, but two new world records to add to her existing LEJOGLE record.

Having already set a new 7-day mileage record of 3,364km along the way, Sarah stopped the clock at 13 days, 20 hours, 27 minutes, beating the existing outright record by 3 days and 32 minutes. And no saddle sores!

Supporting an elite althlete on a world record attempt is something that most brands dream of. But for a small, independent brand like Kostüme - one which prioritises doing things differently - it's perhaps the ultimate validation of our unique approach.

We first got in touch with Sarah in the days preceding LEJOGLE with an offer to try our long distance bib shorts with clipless toilet break feature.

Unfortunately, it was too close to the record to risk major changes. But - after being hospitalised for saddle sores on the LEJOGLE record - Sarah took our our shorts on a training block to the Pyrenees, and the rest is now history.

On this page you can learn more about Sarah, the route, the record, and Kostüme's supporting role as the technical apparel provider.

“Working with Sarah has pushed us up to - and sometimes beyond - our limits. But that's the point. Sarah benefits. We benefit. And our customers benefit. And hopefully we set a new high water mark for performance."- Ed Bartlett, Founder, Kostüme

BEYOND ENDURANCE

Recorded days before leaving for Tarifa, Sarah sat down with Kostüme and fellow record-breaking endurance cyclist, Alan Colville to discuss overcoming adversity, mindset, training and pushing the limits of human endurance on two wheels. THE ROUTE AND RECORD

On Friday June 5 Sarah left Tarifa in Spain, on a route across Europe that will hopefully end at Nordkapp, North Norway - the northernmost part of Europe accessible by a road.

The full route stats:

  • 9 countries
  • 6,000km distance
  • 35,000m climbing
  • Current record: 16 days, 20 hours, 59 minutes

To beat the outright record and achieve her goal of finding the absolute limits of her potential performance, Sarah is riding with a full support team, sleeping only 2-3 hours per day and consuming 11,000 calories every day.

She will also need to cope with temperatures ranging from 35c in Spain to -10c in Norway, which will test both Sarah as well as Kostüme kit to extremes.

ABOUT SARAH RUGGINS

Growing up, Sarah was a promising track running star, with aspirations of joining Team Canada as an Olympic hopeful.

But aged 15, she developed an autoimmune condition widely regarded as one of the world’s most painful diseases.

She lost the ability to walk, to use her hands or move. She was transferred abroad for urgent 24/7 care and would spend years fighting to recover.

Sarah's journey with cycling only began in 2023, which makes her LEJOGLE record - and current One Way North challenge - all the more impressive.
